The pi symbol (pi image by Ewe Degiampietro from Fotolia.com)

Pi is an irrational number commonly used in mathematics that equals approximately 3.14159. Pi is the ratio of the diameter and circumference of a circle (the circumference of a circle is about 3.13159 times larger than the diameter.). Since pi is an irrational number, it cannot be written out fully so the symbol π is commonly used to express pi. There is no key dedicated to the pi symbol on a standard keyboard.
