The HP Deskjet 840C uses ink jet print technology to make both colour and monochromatic printouts on a wide variety of media. You will need to install the printer's drivers and software using the installation CD that came with the printer before you can use the printer with a computer. The printer features only one input area, making it easier to operate than some larger and more complex printer models. You can manage the printer from the computer using both the printer's driver window and the Deskjet Toolbox software.
- Skill level:
Change the printer's settings by clicking "File" at the top of the document you wish to print, then click "Print." Select the 840C from the drop-down menu, click the "Properties" button and make any desired changes on each of the tabs in the settings window.
Save your print settings by clicking the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. Click the "Print" button to produce the printout with the settings you selected.
Load paper or other media in the printer by first lifting the output tray so it points straight up. Extend the tray fully from the printer and place the media facedown in the tray, then slide the width guide on the left side of the tray over so it touches the edge of the media.
Align or clean the print cartridges as well as print a test page through the printer's Toolbox program. Click the computer's "Start" icon and click "Programs," then the "HP" folder, then "HP Deskjet Toolbox."
Click one of the buttons in the welcome screen to perform the function labelled on the button. If you need to replace a print cartridge, leave the printer on and open the top cover.
Pull up on the latch on the carriage once the carriage has come to a complete stop, then remove the print cartridge. Remove the wrappings from the new cartridge and place it in the carriage, then lower the latch and close the printer's top cover.
