Windows Safe Mode is a restricted version of Windows that loads only default system components and a very limited set of drivers. You can change your product key from Safe Mode if you have downloaded the Windows XP product key to your Windows desktop. You will need to use "Safe Mode with Networking" to retrieve the Product Key Update Tool from the Microsoft website while using Safe Mode.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

    Click "Start" and "Shut Down."

  2. 2

Click "Restart" in the drop-down dialogue, and click "OK."

  3. 3

Press F8 as your computer is booting to open the "Boot Options" menu.

  4. 4

Move the down arrow until "Safe Mode with Networking" is highlighted, and then press "Enter."

  5. 5

Open your Web browser once you have opened Windows XP in Safe Mode, and visit the Product Key Update Tool link (see Resources).

  6. 6

Review the installation agreement, and check "I understand this tool will send the above information to Microsoft" to activate the "Download" link. Click it.

  7. 7

Click "Run" to open the file when it finishes downloading.

  8. 8

Enter your new Windows XP product key when prompted, and then click "Next."

  9. 9

Click "Finish." Your Windows XP product key has now been updated.
