Visual Basic .NET does not come with the native ability to read PDF files. It does not contain the necessary file conversion tools or fonts. However, this is such an oft-requested feature that the company offers a free add-on to enable PDF reading. Installing it requires a few steps, but once you finish you will be able to open any PDF in VB NET.

Download the VB PDF Source Code from Visual Basic (see "References"). You have to scroll down the page for the link.
Unzip the file that downloads using WinZip or a similar archive program.
Save the files contained within the ZIP somewhere on your hard drive.
Open VB NET.
Select "Add File" from the "Project" menu.
Navigate to the folder containing the files you unzipped.
Select "mjwPDF.cls" and click "Open."
Tips and warnings
- Note that this only covers reading PDF files in VB NET. To write PDF files, you will have to do quite a bit more coding.
