Rubber band guns, while far from being lethal, can be used for target shooting and for practicing your “shooting eye.” You can make a rubber band gun that will fire more than one rubber band before needing to be reloaded, effectively making it a semi-automatic rubber band weapon. You will need rubber bands and a few items commonly found around the house. It shouldn’t take you more than an hour to make your semi-automatic rubber band gun.

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the ruler on a table with the long side facing you. Place a pencil, point down, on top of the right side of the ruler with the eraser end of the ruler overlapping the top of the ruler by an inch.

  2. 2

Wrap a rubber band around the pencil and the ruler. Tie a knot in the rubber band.

  3. 3

Place a pencil an inch to the left of the pencil on the right. Overlap the eraser end of the pencil on the top of the ruler by an inch. Wrap a rubber band around the pencil and the ruler. Tie a knot in the rubber band.

  4. 4

Push the pointed ends of the two pencils together. Secure the two pencils together at the pointed ends with four wrapped-around rubber bands.

  5. 5

Wrap a rubber band around the two pencils where they both meet the top side of the ruler. Wrap a rubber band around the two pencils where they both meet the bottom side of the ruler.

  6. 6

Place a pencil 3 inches to the left of the pencil on the right. Overlap the eraser end of the pencil on the top of the ruler by an inch. Wrap a rubber band around the pencil and the ruler. Tie a knot in the rubber band.

  7. 7

Cut a hole 2 inches in from the left end of the ruler with the utility knife. Push the loop of a rubber band through the hole.

  8. 8

Turn the ruler over. Place the eraser end of a pencil through the loop of the rubber band that is exiting the hole. Turn the ruler over. Place the ruler so that the two pencils that are wrapped together are on the left side.

  9. 9

Loop a rubber band around the front edge of the ruler. Loop the other end of the rubber band around the top of the pencil closest to the front end of the ruler.

  10. 10

Loop a rubber band around the front edge of the ruler. Loop the other end of the rubber band around the top of the pencil behind the one that has the rubber band already looped around it.

  11. 11

Go into your backyard. Aim your rubber band repeater gun at a tree or rock. Pull back on the pencil at the bottom of your rubber band repeater gun to “fire” the first rubber band. Pull the loop of the rubber band off the top of the pencil. Put the loop on the top of the pencil that is in front of the one that the rubber band was just pulled off of.

  12. 12

Pull the “trigger” of your rubber band repeater gun again to fire the second rubber band at your target. Reload the two rubber bands to continue firing.

Tips and warnings

  • The width of the rubber band that is being fired will influence how far it can fly.
  • Don’t aim a rubber band gun at a person or pet because a flying rubber band can cause injuries.
