How to find a person's age

Updated April 17, 2017

Finding out a person's age can be challenging if you don't know where to look. There are only a few kinds of official documents that will tell you how old a person is, and most of them are not available to the public. The website, Vital Records keeps an online database of birth certificates and death certificates. Either of these documents will show the year a person was born, and they are available to the public. Vital Records does charge a membership fee to access to their database; however, you can sign up for a free seven-day trial.

Go to the Vital Records home page,

Enter the person's first and last name. Select the State where they were born, or leave it set to "Nationwide" if you are unsure. Click on "Search."

Follow the on-screen instructions to sign up for a free seven-day trial. Once you have created your account you will be taken to a welcome screen. On the welcome screen the first few results from your search will be displayed. Click on "View more results" to see all of the records found. Once you find the name of the specific person you are looking for, click on their name to view the birth or death certificate, which will tell you the person's birth date.

Certain states may charge additional fees for birth records. Access to birth certificates may be restricted in some states.
