A Sony MTS file is an Advance Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD) format. High definition digital video recorders use this format to record at resolutions of 1080i and 720p. According to the AVCHD Information web site, the AVCHD format was developed by both Panasonic and Sony. The format can be played with software like Sony Vegas Pro and Final Cut Pro by Apple. However, if you want a free media player that plays MTS files on Windows, Mac OS and Linux, then use VLC media player.
