The TomTom XL GPS navigation system is designed to be easily expandable by using SD cards. If you've never added an SD card to your TomTom XL before, proper formatting of the card is necessary to ensure that the unit will accept the card. TomTom's website offers a number of downloadable maps for purchase, which saves the trouble of having to buy a new GPS system for trips--an especially useful feature for the world traveller.

  • SD card reader

    Connect your SD card reader to the computer and make sure that it is on. Insert the SD card into the reader.

    Format the SD card. When selecting your formatting options, select FAT32 formatting.

    Connect your TomTom XL to your computer and open the HOME software.

    Set your TomTom XL to accept SD cards instead of using the internal memory. In the HOME software, select the "Device" menu and select "Disconnect Device."

    Unplug the device from the computer and insert the SD card into the SD card slot, then reconnect the device. Your TomTom XL will now save and use the memory card instead of the internal memory.
