The Garmin Forerunner 305 is a GPS unit, heart rate monitor and personal trainer device all in one. The 305 is worn around the wrist and offers a GPS tracking device and map, as well as a wireless heart rate monitor that works with a chest strap worn around the user's upper midsection. The Forerunner 305 has three main data screens and tracks previous and current workouts to provide workout information while the user is exercising and afterward, when the data can be downloaded to a Garmin website. Operating the Garmin Forerunner 305 is relatively simple to learn.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Connect the heart strap around the midsection of the chest and attach the Forerunner 305 to the wrist once the device is properly charged.

  2. 2

Step outside to a clear space and press the "Power" button on the Forerunner. This allows the GPS to receive a satellite signal. Wait until the GPS signal appears on the device face. Enter the training mode by pushing "Mode" and then "Training" to begin setting up the device.

  3. 3

Select "Alerts" to sound an alert when a set time or distance has been met while exercising. Choose "Time/Dist Alert" and enter the desired time or distance and then press "Mode."

  4. 4

Return to "Training" and push "Pace/Speed Alert" to set an alarm that will sound if the entered pace or speed is dropped. Choose from the preset list or push "Custom" to enter a specific number. Press the "Mode" when finished.

  5. 5

Select "Auto Pause" in the "Options" menu if you stop temporarily during the workout. Press "Mode" to exit.

  6. 6

Pick a landmark or distance point during the workout to use as a finish line. You can also begin a new lap at that point if you want to continue your workout. Go to the "Training Options" menu and choose "Auto Lap" and then select "By Distance" or "By Position" to choose a distance or landmark. Press "Mode" to exit.

  7. 7

Perform intervals by predetermining the pace, rest, distance or time for each interval in the "Training" menu and then pressing "Workouts" and "Interval." Press "Start" to begin.

  8. 8

Get the help (and possible motivation) of an automatic training partner in the form of a small figure on the Forerunner by going to the "Training" menu, followed by "Options" and then "Virtual Partner."
