How to Add Sound for an Optiplex 330 Computer
If your speakers are connected and your drivers installed, you should hear sound. (computer speakers image by sarit saliman from Fotolia.com)

The Dell Optiplex 330 ships with ADI 1984 High Definition Audio built in. This provides audio functionality right out of the box. In order to utilise this function you must have two things: speakers and installed device drivers. The computer will come with both, but if it is inherited from a past user or purchased second-hand, either or both could be lost. Dell makes reinstalling drivers a very simple process and computer speakers are easy to find and any kind will work.

Instructions

  1. 1

Obtain a set of computer speakers. They don't have to be Dell speakers or any particular brand. Any computers speakers will have the 3.175mm (1/8 inch) stereo jack that will fit in to your Optiplex 330. The jack will typically be light green to correspond to the port colour on the back of the computer.

  2. 2

Plug the audio cable into the back of your computer. The connector will fit in to a small lime-green port with a sound wave graphic.

  3. 3

Plug in the speaker's power cord. Some older or larger computer speaker sets will need to be plugged in to an A/C outlet for power, others can be connected directly to the computer through a USB port.

  4. 4

Turn on the speakers. Depending on the model, there will be either a knob to turn on the power and adjust volume, or a button to power on the unit and a knob for the volume. In either case, ensure that the speakers are powered on and the volume is set to an audible level.

  5. 5

Play a song or a game that makes audible sound to test the speakers. They should work right away. If they do not, your computer's hard drive may have been reformatted and the driver may have been deleted.

  1. 1

Visit the Dell Support page to download the drivers for Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated HD Audio using the link provided in the Resources section below.

  2. 2

Select the appropriate driver and click "Download." Save the driver file to your desktop.

  3. 3

Double-click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts to extract and install the drivers.

  4. 4

Restart your computer when the driver installation is complete and test the speakers. You should now have full audio functionality.
