Although Hotmail traditionally is used to send e-mail messages, you also can use it to send SMS or text messages. It takes little time to send an SMS message from Hotmail, and this is useful if you want to send a text message to someone and don't have text messaging enabled on your cell phone. You only need the recipient's number and the cell phone carrier domain to send a text message from Hotmail.

Sign in to your Hotmail account with your user name and password.
Click "New" to compose a new e-mail message.
Enter the 10-digit cell phone number you want to send a text message to followed by "@" and the cell phone carrier domain. For example, if you want to send a message to an AT&T customer from Hotmail, you would add "@txt.att.net" to the mobile number.
Enter a subject for the text and then compose the message. Limit the message to 160 characters. If you send a longer message, the message might be cut off or the recipient might receive multiple text messages.
Click "Send" to send an SMS message from Hotmail.
