How to Crimp an RJ45 Cable

RJ45 connectors are used along with UTP (Universal Twisted Pair) Cat5 network cable to create ethernet connections. These are commonly used for connecting computers together on a local area network (LAN). These type of connections are useful, for example, in places that can't receive a signal from a wireless network. To create a Cat5 connection with this type of cable, you'll have to terminate the connection by crimping an RJ45 connector onto the end of the cable.

Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things you need

  • UTP cable
  • RJ45 connector
  • Wire strippers
  • Sharp knife
  • RJ45 crimper
  1. 1

Measure the length that you need for your Cat5 cable and cut it to the required length.

  2. 2

Cut the end of the cable at a 90 degree angle with the wire cutters. Use the wire stripper or utility knife to cut off approximately one inch of the insulation at the end of the wire.

  3. 3

Arrange the colored signal wires based on how they need to be set up for your particular use. A straight signal network cable, for example, will be wired differently than a crossover cable. Use a small piece of tape to hold the wires in the proper order.

  4. 4

Slip an RJ45 connector over the end of the wires. The connector should fit snugly over the Cat5 cable. The metal terminals in the RJ45 connector should be positioned above the colored wires in the Cat5 cable when correctly seated.

  5. 5

Insert the connector and wires into the RJ45 crimper. Press down firmly. You should feel the contacts inside the RJ45 connector press through the wires inside.

Tips and warnings

  • If stripping the wires with a knife, use caution.
