VMDK files store contents of a VMware virtual hard disk and are primarily used by VMware software. Windows comes equipped with native utilities to assist you in completing data storage and recovery processes. You can use the Backup And Restore Center to restore VMDK files as long as you have previously created a backup of the file.

Connect the volume that holds the backup of the VMDK file to your computer.
Click "Start" and choose "Control Panel." Click "System And Maintenance" and choose "Backup And Restore." Click the "Restore My Files" button in the Backup And Restore Center window that appears.
Click the "Browse By Files" button and scroll through the list of files to the VMDK file you want to restore. Click on the file name of the VMDK file and click "Next."
Choose "In the original location" or click "Browse" to select a new destination for the restored file.
Click "Restore" to begin the process of restoring the VMDK file. A progress bar will open, detailing the steps of the restore process.
