I'm Unable to Open XML Documents in Outlook Express
Some attachments cannot open in Outlook e-mail. (e-mail image by Soja Andrzej from Fotolia.com)

Outlook Express e-mail attachments formatted in HTML or XML are stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder on the hard disk. When you try to open this type of attachment, Internet Explorer will step in and try to open the attachment from the Temporary Internet Files folder. However, Internet Explorer cannot open .xml attachments from that folder, so when you try to open one, an error message will appear. To open an .xml attachment file successfully, you need to save the file to another location and open it separate from the email.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Start your Outlook Express e-mail account and locate the message with the .xml attachment you are unable to open.

  2. 2

Place your cursor on the attachment link and right-click on your mouse. Highlight the "Save As" option and click it.

  3. 3

Locate the "File" type option near the bottom of the "Save As" window. Choose the "Save Attachments" option for the file type.

  4. 4

Select a location from the list of options on the left-hand side of the "Save As" window. Choose a location that is memorable and easy to find, such as your documents folder or the desktop.

  5. 5

Rename the attachment file if necessary. Click "Save" to save the file in your chosen location.

  6. 6

Close the Outlook Express e-mail message window carrying the .xml attachment.

  7. 7

Find the attachment file you have saved in the chosen located. Open the file by double-clicking on it.
