The DVD drive that is used with a PC is locked so it will only play commercial DVDs made for the same country, or "region" that the PC is being used in. To make a PC's DVD player region free, adjustments must be made to the player's firmware. This is a straightforward, if involved procedure, and requires downloading and installing a few free programs -- there are a number of these available at no cost and which all operate in a similar manner to modify the DVD player.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download and install a DVD drive information program such as, for example, the DISC.info program (see Resources). Double-click the file once downloaded to decompress the program onto the desktop.

  2. 2

Double-click the program to launch it. Select the DVD drive from the drop down menu at the top of the program's screen. Write down all of the information that is presented on the screen. Quit the program.

  3. 3

Download the appropriate firmware flashing program that applies to your DVD drive from a firmware flashing website -- for example, the "Firmware page" website (see Resources).

  4. 4

Double-click the firmware file once downloaded. Follow the menu prompts to install the program onto the DVD drive. Click "OK" on the confirmation window when it appears to quit the program.

  5. 5

Download a region code defeating program to the desktop such as, for example, the DVD Region Killer program (see Resources). Double-click the file once downloaded. Follow the menu prompts to install the program onto the DVD drive. Click "OK" on the confirmation window when it appears to quit the program. Restart the PC.

  6. 6

Launch the firmware program by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" pop-up menu. Select the DVD drive from the drop down menu beneath "Device" on the program's screen. Click the "Start" button at the bottom of the program's screen.

  7. 7

Wait as a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen and fills in from left to right. Click the "Done" button on the confirmation window when it appears. Quit the firmware program.

  8. 8

Launch the region code defeating program by selecting it from the "Start," "All Applications" pop-up menu. Select the DVD drive from the drop down menu on the program's main screen.

  9. 9

Click the "Start" button to run the program. Quit the program after clicking the "OK" button on the confirmation window that appears when the program has finished. Restart the PC.

Tips and warnings
