Often, a watch band breaks or begins to look old long before the workings of the watch wear out. There is no need to replace that working timepiece when you can create a new, personalised strap from beads or ribbon.
Measure your wrist and add 3 inches. Cut the ribbons to this length.
Layer the ribbons with the wrong sides together. Pin the ribbons together.
Stitch along all four edges of the ribbon to form a reversible strip.
Thread the ribbon through the D-rings. Fold the end over the rings and stitch it down.
Slide the end of the ribbon through the bars of the watch.
Measure your wrist and add 4 inches. Cut the beading wire to that length and then cut it in half.
Thread a crimp bead onto one piece of wire. Slide the wire through one of the watch bars and then back through the crimp bead. Use the crimping tool to close the crimp bead.
String the beads in the desired pattern until you reach 1 inch from the wire end.
Add a crimp bead and then one side of the toggle clasp. Pass the wire back through the crimp bead and close the bead.
Thread a crimp bead on the other piece of wire and attach the wire to the watch face.
String the beads and attach the other half of the toggle clasp.
Widen the beaded band by repeating the steps with one or more additional strings of beads on each side of the watch face. Make a stretch band by tying one end of beading elastic to the watch face, stringing the beads and then tying the other end to the watch. Add a drop of jewellery glue to each knot for security.
Use the heaviest coated beading wire for the bands, as the constant wear may cause thinner wire to break sooner.
