Homemade Steamer Weed Killers
Killing weeds doesn't mean you have to expose your garden to a host of chemicals. (Jupiterimages/Photos.com/Getty Images)

Just as bugs and dirt are a part of every garden, so are weeds. Using chemicals on your weeds is effective but a gamble. If you use many of these chemicals incorrectly, you risk upsetting the delicate balance of the soil and killing plants and flowers you intended to protect. Luckily, natural weed killers will annihilate pesky weeds, without subjecting you or your garden to dangerous chemicals. Steam is one of those natural remedies.

  1. 1

Connect the cord of the steamer to an extension cord, plugging the extension cord into the outlet nearest your garden. Fill the water tank of your steamer with water. Turn the steamer on to the highest setting.

  2. 2

Put on your work gloves and take the steamer out to your garden. Point the mouth of the steamer directly at the roots of each weed, blasting them with steam.

  3. 3

Move the steamer upward, misting the leaves with steam as well. Continue doing this until each weed visibly wilts. Fill the water tank back up with water and repeat this entire process.

Tips and warnings

  • If you find that your clothes steamer isn't getting hot enough, a blast of pure hot water directed at the roots of each weed will help you make faster progress.
