The Sony Reader is a device that displays e-books on a screen designed to imitate the pages of a paper book. The Reader supports several different e-book formats, including Adobe PDF, BBeB, ePub, Sony Connect Store books and more. Some PDF files may not render correctly or may be unreadable if not formatted specifically for the screen size of your Sony Reader. To make the PDF file readable, you must edit the PDF's formatting to adhere to the Sony Reader specifications.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download a PDF viewer that has the ability to save a file to RTF (rich text format) or DOC (Word Document), or use an online converter to convert the PDF file into an RTF or DOC file. Adobe Acrobat is a program that can save PDF to RTF, for example, while PDF Online and Zamzar are both free online conversion services that offer the same feature.

  2. 2

Convert your PDF file to RTF or DOC using the service or program you selected. In Adobe Acrobat, select "File," then "Save as." Select the drop-down menu and choose "RTF," then enter a name for the PDF file and click "Save." To use PDF Online's conversion tool, open your browser and enter "http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf2word/index.asp" into the URL field. Press "Go" or select the "Enter" key. Click the "Choose File" button, select your PDF file from the list, then choose "Upload and Convert." To use Zamzar, enter "zamzar.com" into the URL field in your browser, then press "Enter." Click "Choose File," then select "RTF" from the drop-down menu. Enter the email address you would like the file e-mailed to, then click "Convert."

  3. 3

Right click on the RTF or DOC file and select "Open With." Choose the word processor you have installed on your computer from the list that appears, then click "Open." If you do not have a word processor installed, several are available online for download, including Open Office, Abiword and Microsoft Word Trial Edition.

  4. 4

Open the "Margin Settings" in your word processor; it could be located in the "Page Settings," "Document Settings" or "Edit" menu, depending on which word processor you're using. Set the dimensions for the top, bottom, left and right margins to 0.15 inches. Set the "Gutter" margin to 0.00 inches. Set the "Gutter Position" to "Left." Change the page dimension width to 3.47 inches and the height to 4.54 inches. Click "Apply." If prompted, choose "Apply to Entire Document."

  5. 5

Format the document's text with the font and style you want. To change the font, press "Ctrl" and "A" on the keyboard, then click the font drop-down menu and choose the font you want. Select the drop-down box next to "Font Size" to change the text size. Click on the "Color" box and choose the colour you want the text to be. When finished, choose "File," then "Save" to save a copy of the file.

  6. 6

Print the document to a PDF file using a PDF printer. If you don't have a PDF printer already installed on your computer, download one online. Three such programs include Adobe Acrobat, Bullzip and Cute PDF. Once the PDF printer is installed on your computer, choose "File," then "Print." Select the PDF printer from the list of installed printers, then click "Print." A save dialogue will appear. Choose a folder to save the PDF file in, then choose "Save."

  7. 7

Connect your Sony Reader to your computer. Transfer the new PDF file to Reader, then disconnect the device and open the document in the Reader to make sure it is readable.
