Sony tube TVs on occasion require a degaussing procedure. This can happen due to nearby unshielded speakers, stray magnetic fields from tools, and Earth's natural field. Most TVs will automatically degauss when the set is turned on, but this often is incomplete or ineffective. Using a hand-held degaussing tool can clear the screen discolouration found at the corners of the TV, restoring normal set operation after a few minutes.

Turn on the set from the front panel. Wait a few seconds for the set to warm up, and place an image on-screen.
Plug the degaussing tool into a nearby AC outlet.
Hold the tool at the centre of the screen. Slowly rotate the tool around the front of the screen evenly, until the discolouration is gone.
Turn the set off, then back on to complete the process.
