The deflector guard is a safety feature that is designed into most walk behind mowers such as those produced by MTD. The deflector is commonly formed of plastic and fits over the side discharge opening of the mower. Rocks, nails and other materials can be propelled from the mower blades at a high rate of speed. The channelled downward design of the deflector guard forces thrown items down toward the ground instead of out and away from the mower.

- MTD side deflector guard
Position the MTD walk behind mower on a level surface so that it is easily accessible and will not roll while being worked on.
Locate the two small holes on top of the mower deck just above the side discharge opening. Depending on the model, the holes can be either square or round.
Hold the mounting plate located on the inside of the deflector guard's larger end. Pull the plastic guard back and away so the mounting plate is accessible.
Position the guard on the MTD walk behind mower deck so that the holes in the mounting plate align with the holes in the mower deck.
Insert a bolt in to each of the two holes and through the MTD deck. Thread a nut onto both bolts. Access the threads of the bolts through the side discharge and tighten the nuts on the bolts with a wrench.
