The Color LaserJet 1600 printer from HP is designed for use with HP-manufactured print cartridges, but there are third party supplies that work with the printer. You'll have to reset your LaserJet 1600 for use with non-HP cartridges before printing with them. Non-HP cartridges will not report their toner levels properly, and the printer will not automatically stop printing when a cartridge runs out or toner, but you might save enough money to make those sacrifices worthwhile.

Open the front door of the LaserJet 1600 and gently pull the empty cartridge from its mount.
Grasp the replacement cartridge by the blue handles and rock it gently from side to side to distribute the toner evenly throughout the cartridge.
Take off the orange shipping locks and shipping tape from the cartridge. Align the cartridge with the tracks inside the printer.
Gently push the cartridge into the printer along the tracks until it is firmly seated. Close the printer's door once the cartridge is seated. The printer will detect the third party cartridge you installed.
Press the "Select" button--the one with a check mark on it--to reset the printer for use with the third party toner cartridge.
