How to Restore the Factory Image on a Compaq

Its an unfortunate fact that at some point your computer will likely encounter some form of virus infection, system crash or hard drive problem that causes it to become unusable. HP includes the Backup and Recovery Manager on Compaq computers to provide you with the tools to resolve these problems without having to rely on outside help. Perform a restore to the factory image if your computer is experiencing these issues or if you want to wipe it clean before selling it or giving it to another owner.

    Click "Start" and type "Recovery" into the search box. Click the "Recovery Manager" option in the list of results to access the HP Backup and Recovery Manager.

    Click "System Recovery" and click "Next" to restart your computer into the appropriate recovery environment. The Backup and Recovery Manager will automatically open once your computer restarts.

    Click "System Recovery" under the "I Need Help Immediately" section and click "Next." Close the Microsoft System Restore utility if it loads.

    Click "Next" in the System Recovery window to begin restoring the Compaq to the factory image. Click "Finish" in the notification window to restart your computer into the original operating condition.
