Tunisia is a small country of 10.5 million located in Northern Africa. It gained independence from France in 1956. It has one of the most developed telecommunication infrastructures in Northern Africa
and it's continuing to grow. Close to 12 per cent of the population has fixed phone lines and the mobile market grows every year (as of September 2010). So if you have friends in Tunisia a good and inexpensive way to keep in touch with them is to send free text messages (SMS) online.
- Skill level:
Use SMSFree4All (see Resources). This site allows you to send both SMS and MMS messages to any phone in Tunisia for free. It doesn't require registration. Just enter the 6-digit phone number, select the telecom service provider and the country code (216) and type in your message of 140 characters or less.
Alternatively, go to FreeSMS2Mobile (see Resources). In addition to texting to other cell phones, this site allows you to send bulk SMS and to send SMS via e-mails as well. Just select the country, enter the local phone number, and type in your message of up to 197 characters.
For a third option, use AllFreeTexting (see Resources). This is a simple site where you just enter the country code and the appropriate phone number. Type the message and click "Send the Text."
