How to Attach Eyelets in Fabric

Eyelets, also known as grommets, are an industrial fastener. They are used in such items such as purses for inserting handles, shoes for inserting laces, and folders for inserting brads. Grommets do not require expert level skills to attach. Here are two ways that you can do it yourself.

Things you need

  • Eyelet punch
  • Hammer and hard surface
  • Package of eyelets or grommets, which should come with attachment tool
  • Sharp scissors

Instructions

    Using a hammer

  1. 1

    Mark the spot where you want to apply the eyelet.

  2. 2

    Slit the area you marked into an x-shape.

  3. 3

    Place the fabric on a hard surface, and place the metal disk under marked area.

  4. 4

    Put the bottom piece of eyelet under the disc, and centre the fabric over it.

  5. 5

    Place the upper piece of the eyelet on top of the marked area and put the long tool on top of it.

  6. 6

    Hammer the long tool until the grommet is in place.

    Using an eyelet punch

  1. 1

    Mark the spot where you want to apply to eyelet.

  2. 2

    Slit the area your marked into an x-shape.

  3. 3

    Put the eyelet onto the pliers.

  4. 4

    Squeeze the eyelet punch onto the fabric to attach the eyelet.
