Tantra is a style of yoga that at one time was taught only to males of the Brahmin caste. These teachings were kept secret until the tenth century C.E. when Tantra yogis taught followers that the physical body was a divine vehicle for self transformation. Tantra massage techniques include a visualisation exercise, and may also include Ayurvedic herbs and dietary advice. Tantra massages are not sexual, and must be not executed with a sexual intention.

Instructions

  1. 1

Practice Tantra massage after experiencing the benefits of healing touch from a professional. Develop your perceptive sensitivity through meditation and self-awareness. Receive a Tantra massage prior to practicing massage on another person.

  2. 2

Bring awareness to your level of comfort and relaxation. Ground your energy. Subtle energies are exchanged when giving a massage. Take a few deep breaths and recognise how you feel in your own body. Center your mind on your inner core alignments. Visualise peace, harmony and abundance to facilitate a relaxed state of being. Relax your gaze and take deep cleansing breaths while you read the energy of the other person.

  3. 3

Watch the belly of the person receiving the massage. Notice how the breath moves through their torso. Match your breathing to theirs. If the person is relaxed and breathing deeply, begin to massage the body. Otherwise, give the massage client verbal instructions about what you plan to do, or ask what it is she wants. Use simple suggestions to calm and quiet any anxiety or sense of discomfort. Make adjustments to the client's posture as appropriate.

  4. 4

Communicate with your massage client to engage in the proper movement, pressure and release with your hands during the massage. Balance your time for the massage according to the information you receive from the other person. If your client asks for a full body massage, know you have approximately fifteen minutes for left, right, top and bottom in one hour. Tantra massage balances any excess or deficiency in the flow of male and female energies. Female energy is cold, slow and still. Male energy is hot, quick and moving.

  5. 5

End your Tantra massage with a guided meditation. Synchronise your breathing while using touch. Give the meditation in a slow, calm voice. Common themes in guided imagery are healing light, natural landscapes, asking the inner guru and taking a journey. Allow time for the receiver to process the work of your massage alone. Instruct them that you have finished, and they may take as long as needed to recover from the effects.

Tips and warnings

  • Locate a massage therapist that will help you train your massage skills in tantric healing. Recognise your own limitations such as fatigue, illness, or emotional distress. Do not become attached to any outcome--good or bad--of your work in Tantra massage.
  • Tantra massage workshops are not sexual in nature. Inquire about the training before attending a vague reference to Tantric practices in a workshop or educational program.
