Good Smelling Homemade Fabric Softeners
Conditioner is one of the key ingredients in some homemade fabric softeners. (toilet ries. bottle of conditioner and soap image by L. Shat from Fotolia.com)

Fabric softener is great for keeping natural fabrics feeling soft, synthetic fabrics free of static and everything smelling great. It also can be very expensive, depending on the number of wash-loads you have. For others, the strong scents may cause allergic reactions, including headache, sneezing and nausea. Instead of worrying about buying the perfect softener, consider making your own with some basic household supplies.

Instructions

  1. 1

Fill a 2-liter bottle (about 8 cups) with 3 cups of water, 1 1/2 cups of white distilled vinegar and 1 cup of hair conditioner. Shake well and use the same amount as your usual fabric softener.

  2. 2

Fill a 2-liter bottle with 1/2 cup baking soda, 3 cups distilled white vinegar, 4 cups of water and 5-7 drops of your favourite essential oils. Pour the vinegar in slowly, since it reacts with the baking soda. For a unique touch, try combining scents.

  3. 3

Fill a softener dispenser--the kind that goes into the tub with the wash items--with white distilled vinegar and add 5 drops of your favourite essential oil.
