SATA hard drives have become quite popular, as SATA hard drives are much faster than older IDE hard drives. Dell's Dimension 8300 computer will allow both IDE as well as SATA hard drives. When installing a SATA drive, it's important to make sure your computer has SATA support enabled. Without this, the SATA drive won't be detected by the computer.

Turn your computer on. When you see the "Dell," start tapping the "F2" key repeatedly until it says "Entering Setup." The "BIOS Setup Utility" window will appear.
Scroll down to "Drive Configuration" using your "Up" and "Down" arrow keys. Press "Enter."
Locate and verify the "Primary SATA" and "Secondary SATA" drives. The default settings should be set to "Auto." If these are disabled, scroll down to "Primary and Secondary SATA drive" options. Change to "Auto."
Press "Esc" on the keyboard to exit. Choose the "Save and Exit" option. Restart the computer. SATA support is now enabled.
