Make Adobe Acrobat files smaller by compressing them in two ways. The PDF Optimizer allows you to compress the objects and structure of the file. The "Reduce File Size" option allows you to remove compatibility for old versions of Acrobat, which also reduces the file size. Use both methods to achieve maximum file size reduction.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Open the desired file in Adobe Acrobat.

  2. 2

Go to the "File" menu and select "Save As".

  3. 3

Click the "Format" pull-down menu and select "Adobe PDF Files, Optimized". Click the "Settings" button.

  4. 4

Go to the menu on the left side of the "PDF Optimizer" window and select "Clean Up". Adjust the Clean Up settings, if desired. The default settings are fine for most uses.

  5. 5

    Press "OK" and press "Save".

  1. 1

Click the "Document" menu with the file open in Acrobat and select "Reduce File Size".

  2. 2

Adjust the Acrobat Version Compatibility using the pull-down menu. You reduce the file size by making the file compatible with only the more recent versions of Acrobat.

  3. 3

    Press "OK" and press "Save".
