Viruses, adware and malware can infect your Toshiba Portege M400 system causing instability and occasionally making it impossible to perform basic tasks on the computer. Power off the Toshiba Portege M400 computer.
Press the "0" and "Power" keys simultaneously to bring up the recovery screen.
Select "Recovery of Factory Default Software" and click "Next."
Choose "Recover to out-of-the-box state" and then "Next." The computer will restore itself to the default software and configuration settings. Allow time for the operation to complete. Then press any key to restart the system.
Internal Hard Drive Recovery
Power off the Toshiba Portege M400. Insert the recovery disc into the CD/DVD drive. Power on the computer.
Press the "F12" key when the first screen displays to initiate the boot menu.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the CD/DVD option. Press the "Enter" key to select this option.
Select "Recovery of Default Factory Software" and click "Next."
Choose "Recover to out-of-the-box state." Click "Next" and then click "Next" again to begin the recovery process. Press any key to restart the computer once the system has notified you that the process is complete.
