Mishandling or forgetting changes made to the settings on your Western Digital USB mass storage drive, such as administrative user name and password, can cause you to lose access to your stored files. Resetting the drive allows you to restore the device to its factory settings, including the default user name and password, without deleting any of the stored content. You can perform a system recovery any time you run into an access problem with your drive. You will not be sacrificing your hardware's content in the process.

Instructions

  1. 1

Turn off your Western Digital USB mass storage drive.

  2. 2

Disconnect all cables from the drive. This includes power and device connectivity.

  3. 3

Press and hold the recovery button within the recovery slot. Use a paper clip or fine-point pen, as the hole is too small to allow access by hand.

  4. 4

Reconnect the power cable into the drive as you continue to hold down the recovery button.

  5. 5

Hold the recovery button down until the power LED lights solidly for a full 10 seconds.
