FireWire (IEEE 1394) and USB (Universal Serial Bus) are both high-bandwidth bus technologies that allow a wide range of peripheral devices to be connected to your computer. The two technologies, though, are not compatible with each other: USB devices must be connected to USB ports, while FireWire devices require a FireWire port. If you have a FireWire video capture device and want to connect it to a computer that only has USB ports, you'll need a FireWire-to-USB adaptor cable that converts streaming signal from a FireWire device. For this method to work, the USB port must support USB 2.0.
Insert the installation disc into your computer's optical drive, and allow the disc to automatically play.
Click the "Install" button for each program to install software applications and drivers from the installation disc, including any applications that support streaming data conversion. Data streaming software, such as ImageMixer, allows your computer to interpret information sent to the USB port from the FireWire device. The software will be different depending upon the brand of FireWire-to-USB adaptor cable you have connected, so only use the software that came with your adaptor cable. Restart your computer as needed between program and driver installations, and restart once the installation process is complete.
Connect the FireWire end of the cable to the FireWire port in the peripheral device.
Connect the USB end of the adaptor cable to the USB port in your computer. A notification pop-up will appear with a message indicating that a device has been connected to your computer.
Only use a true FireWire-to-USB adaptor cable that will regulate the power to the device. A cable that is not meant to connect a FireWire device to a USB port may irreversibly damage the port and attached computer components.
Tips and warnings
- Only use a true FireWire-to-USB adaptor cable that will regulate the power to the device. A cable that is not meant to connect a FireWire device to a USB port may irreversibly damage the port and attached computer components.
