Homeowners and gardeners spend much of their time battling lawn weeds during the warm spring and summer months. One of the first steps to winning the battle against weeds is to identify exactly what type of weed you have. There are several lawn weeds that develop purple-coloured blossoms just before seeding. You can narrow down the possible weed types by closely examining the weeds and identifying those that thrive in the area where you live.

Look at the weed closely and write down a detailed description of it on a piece of paper. Include the number of flower petals on each blossom, the shade of purple and the shape and colour of the leaves. Use a ruler to make a note of the length and width of the leaves.
Pick one of the weeds out of the ground and take it with you so you can more easily research the weed. You can also take a picture of the weed.
Go to a website, such as the one in the Resources section, that allows you to look up weeds by their characteristics. Use the written description of the weed, as well as the weed itself, to guide you as you do your research. If preferred, you can visit a library and look the weed up in a gardening book.
Research the more common lawn weeds first before moving on to more obscure ones. Some of the more common lawn weeds with purple flowers include Henbit, Wild Aster, Chicory and Japanese Clover.
