The MP4 file format is used on portable media players due to its optimisation for playing on small screens. Merge any number of MP4 files together to create a single file that can be managed more efficiently than a number of them when transferred onto a mobile device. The procedure does not require any expertise in video editing. The original MP4 files will not be affected in any way by the merger.

Instructions

  1. 1

Launch the video player that comes with the computer’s operating system, for example, Windows Media Player on a PC or the QuickTime Player on a Mac, by selecting it from the “Start,” “All Applications” pop-up menu (PC) or by double-clicking its icon inside of the “Applications” folder (Mac).

  2. 2

Drag an MP4 file from the computer’s hard drive onto the icon of the video player--the icon will be in the Toolbar at the bottom right of the screen if on a PC and in the Dock to the left or at the bottom of the screen if on a Mac.

  3. 3

Drag the video window that appears on the desktop to the upper left corner of the screen. Click once on the image in the centre of the video window that has been moved to the upper left corner of the screen to make it active.

  4. 4

Click on the "Play” button on the control panel at the bottom of the video window to start the MP4 file playing. Click the “End of File” arrow at the extreme right of the control panel to move the video all the way to its end.

  5. 5

Drag another MP4 file onto the icon of the video player. Drag the video window that appears to the centre of the screen. Click once on the image in the centre of the video window to make it active.

  6. 6

Press “Cntrl+c” (PC) or “Command+c” (Mac) to copy the MP4 video onto the computer’s clipboard.

  7. 7

Click once on the image in the centre of the video window in the upper left of the screen to make it active. Press “Cntrl+v” (PC) or “Command+v” (Mac) to paste the MP4 video from the computer’s clipboard to the end of the video that is in the video window.

  8. 8

Click once on the image in the centre of the video window that has been moved to the centre of the screen to make it active. Click the red “X” in the upper right corner (PC) or the red button in the upper left corner (Mac) to close the video window. Repeat this entire procedure with any additional MP4 files that are to be merged.

  9. 9

Select “Export as” or “Export” from the “File” drop down menu at the top of the screen. Name the merged MP4 file that you area about to make in the “Name” column at the top of the window that appears. Select “Desktop” from the ”Locations” drop-down menu at the middle of the window.

  10. 10

Select “MP4” or “Movie to MP4” from the “Export” drop down menu on the window. Click the “Save” button at the bottom of the window. Quit the video player.

Tips and warnings

  • Do not saved the merged file with the same name as any of the MP4 files that have been used to make it.
