Windows Media Player 11 (WMP) can only play a limited number of audio file formats. You can enable WMP to play the FLAC audio format by installing an audio plug-in for the Windows operating system. Microsoft and third-party companies make audio plug-ins and they can add format capabilities to WMP.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download a FLAC audio plug-in, such as M4a/Flac/Ogg/Ape/Mpc, to the desktop. Double-click the plug-in file once it has fully downloaded. Follow the menu commands to install the plug-in into the Windows operating system. Restart the PC after the installation is done to avoid any interference issues.

Launch the Windows Media Player 11 program (WMP) by selecting “Start” and "All Applications.”

  3. 3

Click on the “File” drop-down menu in the upper-left corner of the WMP screen, then click “Open File."

  4. 4

A window will appear. Navigate to the FLAC audio file that is to be played. Double-click on the FLAC audio file.

  5. 5

Press the “Play” button at the bottom of the WMP program’s control bar. Press the “Stop” button when you are done listening to the FLAC audio file. Quit the WMP program.
