Although mucus can be bothersome, it is actually one of your body's many defence mechanisms. It coats vital organs to protect them from invasive pollutants. Some mucus is necessary in order for your body to function, but too much mucus can be problematic. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to keep mucus at bay, should you experience a build-up or drip.

  1. 1

Eat a bowl of warm chicken soup with an added pinch of cayenne pepper. This will make respiratory mucus thinner and easier to get rid of, since the chicken in the soup contains natural amino acids that can help break mucus down. Tinned soup would serve the purpose, but homemade chicken soup would work even better, as it is likely to contain more chicken and fewer preservatives.

  2. 2

Stop consuming dairy products, including milk, eggs, yoghurt, ice cream, and cheese. These types of products aid in bodily mucus production, and can make your excess mucus problem worse.

  3. 3

Increase water intake by drinking a glass of water every hour on the hour. By doing this, you will keep your airways moist and slippery, so that mucus can be more easily expelled.

  4. 4

Use a humidifier in rooms where you spend most of your time, like your bedroom or your office. These devices increase the amount of water in the air and can eventually help make mucus thinner. Once the mucus has broken down, it is important to follow up by blowing your nose frequently so that it can leave your body completely.

Tips and warnings

  • If your mucus is not clear, this could be a sign of infection. In this case, consult a health care professional.
