A DLL, or Dynamic-Link Library, file contains programming code that can be used to perform a specific function by either Windows or a third-party software. Programmers make programs compatible with a DLL instead of including the same programming language for the same function in every application. This way a program can borrow a DLL whenever it needs to run a specific function, and the application takes less space on the hard drive as a result.
Ws2_32.dll, for example, is used by Windows for Internet and network connections. If the file is corrupt or missing you might not be able to connect to a network, and you will receive an error message. Fortunately, you can restore the Ws2_32.dll file and fix the error for free.

Download the Ws2_32.dll file.
Right-click the saved DLL file and click "Copy." Go to the "Start" menu, click "Computer," double-click the "C:" drive, double-click the "Windows" folder and then the "System32" folder. Right-click anywhere in a blank space and click "Paste."
