Connecting a Dell Vostro laptop computer to a docking station can make the laptop more versatile. A docking station allows a laptop computer to function as a desktop replacement by providing easy access to printers, external hard drives, USB devices and other peripherals. A docking station also allows use of an external keyboard and mouse, instead of the touchpad and small keyboard that comes with the Vostro.

Place the docking station on the desk or workstation and connect the power cord to the back. Connect the USB mouse and keyboard to USB ports on the back of the docking station.

  2. 2

Connect the external monitor to the monitor port on the back of the docking station. The monitor connection is slightly rectangular and approximately 1 inch long. Make sure the thumbscrews are tightened securely when connecting the monitor.

  3. 3

Attach the USB printer to a USB port on the back of the docking station. You also can use an extra USB port on the docking station to connect an external hard drive or other USB-enabled device.

  4. 4

Slide the Dell Vostro onto the top of the docking station, using the tab on the back of the docking station as a guide. Release the laptop when you feel it snap into place.

  5. 5

Plug the power cord on the docking station into an electrical socket and turn on the power. You will see the Dell Vostro's screen display on the external monitor. After logging on to the computer, you will be able to use all of the external devices, including the keyboard, mouse and printer.
