The Shimano Ultegra 10-speed Flight Deck brake-shifter is a dual-control lever for road-specific bicycles. Sold as a pair, these brake-shifters control both braking and shifting functions for the front and rear of the bicycle. The brake-shifters mount on either side of the handlebar just above where the handlebar bends. Before the brake-shifters can be mounted at all, any handlebar tape must first be removed from the handlebar.

  1. 1

Choose either of the Shimano Ultegra 10 speed Flight Deck shifters to mount first. Left and right shifters are not identical. Once mounted on the handlebar, the controls of each shifter will face in toward the bicycle. The left shifter controls the front brake and derailleur, while the right shifter controls the rear brake and derailleur.

  2. 2

Fold back the rubber hood atop the shifter to reveal a 5mm Allen bolt. This bolt tightens the clamp below the shifter. The clamp passes over the handlebar.

  3. 3

Turn the bolt counterclockwise with a 5mm Allen key to loosen the clamp. Loosen the clamp just enough to allow the shifter to pass over the handlebar.

  4. 4

Pass the clamp around the end of the handlebar. Right shifters pass over the right side of the handlebar. Left shifters pass over the left side of the handlebar.

  5. 5

Mount the Shimano Ultegra 10 speed shifter just above the handlebar bend with the levers facing forward.

  6. 6

Check that the shifter is straight and not angled to the left or right. Use the 5mm Allen key to tighten the Allen bolt inside the shifter. Close the rubber hood.

  7. 7

Mount the second Ultegra 10-speed Flight Deck brake-shifter, repeating steps two through six.

  8. 8

Position the second shifter so that it as at an identical height to the first shifter. Use the 5mm Allen key to tighten the bolt inside the shifter just enough to keep the shifter from slipping.

  9. 9

Place a spirit level, also called a bubble level, across the two shifters to check for evenness. The spirit level bubble will be in the centre if the two shifters are even. For needed adjustment, loosen the clamp bolt on the second shifter and reposition the shifter.

  10. 10

Tighten the 5mm Allen bolt fully on the second shifter. Close the rubber brake hood.
