How to make a powdered milk bath

There is nothing more relaxing after a hard day than a warm bath. Adding a milk bath mixture to the tub creates a soothing bath that is not only relaxing but gentle to your skin. You can create this soothing bath with a few household ingredients, and you can even add fragrance to the bath by using scented oils available at bath shops, health food stores and some craft stores. However you choose to prepare your milk bath, the results will be a comforting end to a long day.

Things you need

  • For the Nourishing Milk Bath:
  • Ceramic or glass bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Blender
  • 3 cups powdered milk
  • 1/4 cup oatmeal
  • 1/4 cup dried orris root
  • 1/3 cup blanched or slivered almonds
  • 1 capsule vitamin E
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • Small muslin bag with tie closure
  • Airtight container
  • For the Buttermilk Bath:
  • Ceramic or glass bowl
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • 1/4 cup dry buttermilk powder
  • 1/4 cup dry milk powder
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/8 tsp essential oil (fragrance of your choice)
  • Airtight container

Instructions

    Grind blanched or slivered almonds to a powder in a blender.

    Add the almond meal, powdered milk, oatmeal, cornstarch and dried orris root to a glass or ceramic bowl.

    Break open the vitamin E capsule and add the oil to the dry ingredients. Blend well using a wooden spoon.

    Place a scoop of the mixture in the muslin bag. Tie the top securely.

    Tie the muslin bag around the tub's faucet. Fill the tub with warm water allowing the water to flow over the milk bath bag.

    Store any remaining bath mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

    Combine buttermilk powder, dry milk powder and cornstarch in a glass bowl using a wooden spoon.

    Add the scented oil to the mixture and blend well with a wooden spoon.

    Add ¼ cup of the mixture to the tub as you fill it with warm water. Stir to dissolve completely.

    Store any remaining bath mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Tips and warnings

  • Use nonmetallic bowls and utensils for combining ingredients.
  • Store mixtures in airtight containers for up to three days in the refrigerator.
  • Be aware of skin allergies. Test the mixtures on small areas of skin if you are prone to skin allergies or irritations.
  • Do not use mixtures with oils in whirlpool/hot tubs.
