How to Use "New Super Mario Bros Level Editor"

In New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS, Mario makes his way thorugh eight worlds filled with platforms to jump across and enemies to jump on. Using the New Super Mario Bros. Level Editor, you can take any aspect of the game levels and change them to suit your tastes. Take out enemies to ease the difficulty level or add new platforms that sends Mario into the clouds. Play through your level on a computer when you are finished and see if you can do better than Nintendo.

Instructions

    Launch “New Super Mario Bros. Level Editor.” Select the “New Super Mario Bros.” NDS file.

    Click the “Level Editor” tab on the editor menu. A list of all the available world and levels in “New Super Mario Bros.” will appear.

    Click the “+” next to the game world you want to edit a level in.

    Select the level you wish to edit such as “World 3-2.” Click “Edit Level.” The editor for the level will pop up.

    Click “Create Objects” on the left side of the game screen.

    Choose the object you wish to place from the left menu of the game screen. The object will appear in the game screen.

    Click and drag the object to your desired location in the game screen.

    Click “Create Sprites” on the left side of the game screen.

    Scroll down the list of sprites to choose from allies and enemies.

    Click the sprite you wish to add. A box with the number corresponding to the number of the sprite will appear on the game screen.

    Drag and drop the number to the location you want the sprite such as on a platform for enemies.

    Click “Level Configuration” on the top menu. Click the “Options” tab.

    Enter a number in the “Time Limit” box to change how long a player can explore the level.

    Change the number for the “Start Entrance” and “Midway Entrance” to determine where a player enters the level. The number corresponds to the number in the “Entrance” menu.

    Click the “Graphics” or “Sprite Sets” tab. Choose a set of images to use in the level from the available drop-down boxes. The selected sprites and graphics will be usable in the editor.

    Click “OK” to save your changes and exit the menu.

    Click the brown door on the top of the editing screen.

    Select the “Add Entrance” button on the side of the menu. An entrance will appear in the upper-left of the game screen.

    Drag the entrance across the game screen to your desired location.

    Click the drop-down menu on the left and choose the type of entrance such as pipe, door and slide. Place the entrance over the object it will interact with such as the pipe.

    Add another entrance onto the screen and select “Exit” from the left menu. Enter the number of the previous entrance into the “Connected Pipe ID” to connect the entrance and exit. Locate the number on the upper-left of the game screen.

Tips and warnings

  • Click “Save Level” when you are finished editing. The level will be playable when you open the “New Super Mario Bros.” rom on your computer.
  • Only download the New Super Mario Bros. rom if you own a copy of the game. Do not download or distribute the game for profit.
