Sending out news of your marriage or engagement to friends and family is just part of the joyous occasion. If you are looking for a unique way to spread the news, sending a telegram in the same fashion as you would an announcement is one-of-a-kind and special. Sending announcements for a vintage-style wedding via telegram sets the tone of the ceremony. As opposed to a traditional announcement, however, a telegram is short and to the point. Writing them is simple and a few tips will keep them looking—and sounding—authentic.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Write out short, sharp sentences. Begin the telegram with you and your partner's name and announce your wedding.

  2. 2

Finish off each sentence with a - (STOP) - just as old fashioned telegrams were written to break up sentences. After beginning the telegram, let guests know formal invitations will follow the announcement once a date is set.

  3. 3

Add a parting sentence if you wish after the announcement, such as how happy you both are or any other special details about the engagement.

  4. 4

Avoid adding too many filler words such as “we,” “your,” “that” or “a.” Keep the sentences short and to the point to replicate a real telegram. Write out all numbers into word form, even if you’re adding a date to the telegram.
