Prisons vary from state to state on whether it is permitted to order food packages for inmates. A complete list of prisons that allow food packages is not currently accessible, but the prisons in Ohio, New York and California all permit food packages to be ordered for inmates quarterly and annually. Certain restrictions apply. Food packages must weigh no more than 13.6 Kilogram and be ordered online through an approved vendor to the prison. The inmate must also be on good behaviour with the prison facility in order to receive food packages.

Instructions

  1. 1

Contact the prison in which the inmate is serving time. Call the central office to find out about any restrictions regarding ordering food for the prison inmate, and with which vendor services the prison is affiliated for ordering food for inmates. You cannot order food for inmates if the prison does not permit such services. Your only other option would be to place money on the inmate's books (account) so that he or she can purchase food within the prison.

Access the vendor's website online if the prison you located accepts food packages.

  3. 3

Fill out your account information, including the shipping information to the prison. Applications may require one of the following to complete the order: DOC number, housing number, dormitory number, or institution number, to insure accurate shipping to the designated inmate. Have this information available at the time of your order. Payment options vary from vendor to vendor, and can be in the form of a debit or credit card, check or money order.

  4. 4

Choose the food items that you wish to send to the inmate. Some vendors offer the choice to choose alternate substitutions of food items, in the event that originally ordered items may be out of stock at the time of the order. Check the weight limit requirement (generally 13.6 Kilogram) and order items that stay within this limit. Some vendors will offer food items with their weights posted next to the item for convenience. Most prisons will not allow more than one package at a time.

  5. 5

Choose the time of the year that you would like the food package to be shipped to the inmate. You can arrange for a food package to be sent every quarter, once a year or on holidays.

  6. 6

Submit your order either online, fax or by mail.
