How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Passport the Same Day
For a fee, lost or stolen passports can be replaced in 24 hours. (passport image by isatori from

Losing your passport, especially when travelling overseas, can be unsettling. While it is expensive to replace a lost or stolen passport within 24 hours, it is also fairly easy. There are two ways to expedite a passport replacement: contact your country's embassy or state department directly, or employ a third-party online business. Going through governmental channels costs less but requires an in-person appointment and case evaluation. Online services, as of August 2010, may cost up to £325, including government fees, but can sometimes be handled via courier.

  1. 1

Contact your country's state department or, if you are travelling internationally, embassy or consulate. Report your passport lost or stolen, make an appointment to visit a passport facility and give your reasons for needing an overnight replacement. See Resources for contact information.

  2. 2

Complete and print the necessary passport application forms. In the U.S., these are the application form DS-11, and the Lost or Stolen Passport Statement, DS-64. DS-11 and DS-64 can be downloaded at the Lost and Stolen Passports section of the Department of State's Travel website. If you do not have access to a printer, you can request the forms at the embassy or passport facility.

  3. 3

Submit the forms, along with two passport photographs and travel information, in person at a passport agency or acceptance facility. Provide evidence, such as an airline ticket, that you require a passport within 24 hours. This service is approximately £110, including the £39 expediting charge, plus overnight courier fees.

  1. 1

Visit a legitimate online passport agency. No matter what company you choose, make sure to research its background and business practices before committing to it. These companies will act as liaison between you and the state department.

  2. 2

Call the company and speak to an agent, either to make an appointment or to coordinate mailing and delivery times.

  3. 3

Complete and print the DS-11 and DS-64 forms, which are available on any passport agency or state department website.

  4. 4

Send the completed DS-11 and DS-64 forms, along with two passport pictures, travel information and fees, by FedEx or courier to the company address. Some companies also require authorisation letters, which legally entitle them to act on your behalf. Once your application is successfully completed, the company will send your new passport by overnight mail.
