The Acer Aspire One is an inexpensive netbook designed for portability. This laptop computer is devoid of most external hardware (including a CD/DVD drive) and has a smaller screen, keyboard and mouse pad than a typical laptop. However, a user can connect to the Internet with the computer, although an adaptor is required to use a dial-up Internet connection.

Things you need
- USB to dial-up adaptor
- Phone cable
- Dial-up installation CD
Connect the laptop to a wireless Internet source prior to setting up a dial-up connection. This is required, as there is no CD/DVD drive on the computer. You typically can get free Wi-Fi access at coffee shops, restaurants, schools or hotels.
Navigate to the website of the manufacturer of the USB to dial-up adaptor. Locate the company's support webpage, go to "Downloads and Drivers" or a similar heading, then choose your adaptor and click the driver download. After the file has downloaded to the computer, double-click it to load the installation wizard. Follow the prompts of the wizard to completely install the driver onto the computer.
Insert the USB end of the adaptor into one of the USB ports on the Acer Aspire One (there are three on the computer).
Connect the phone line running from the wall into the open phone line connection port on the other side of the adaptor.
Download the dial-up software (you need to connect the Acer to a local Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to do this; coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and libraries typically offer Wi-Fi). This is obtained from the dial-up provider's website for free (typically Net Zero or Juno). Wait for the installation wizard load onto the screen.
Accept the license agreement, then click "Next" for the installation name and location. Select your current location (choose the city, state and zip code). A list of local telephone numbers is displayed. Select a phone number with the same area code as yours (to avoid long distance charges when connecting to the Internet). Set a password in order to access the Internet and choose "Continue." Click "Install" and the dial-up software installs onto the computer.
Launch the dial-up connection software, type in the required password and click "Connect." The Acer laptop now is connected to the Internet.
