Sampling and electronic musical instruments have revolutionised the music-making business. Gone are the days when an actual instrument is needed to generate a sound. Now, with MIDI triggering and computers, musicians have greater opportunities to select the exact sound one wants without the limitation and expense of multiple physical instruments. Connecting an electronic drum kit to a computer running EZdrummer is relatively simple and opens the door to a new way of music performance and recording.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Computer (Mac or PC) with USB port
  • EZdrummer software
  • Electronic drum kit with MIDI output
  • MIDI-to-USB cable

  1. 1

Install the EZdrummer software onto your computer using the installation instructions.

  2. 2

Connect the electronic drum kit to the computer using the MIDI-to-USB cable. Using the MIDI-to-USB cable, connect the MIDI OUT plug to the MIDI IN port on the drum kit, and the MIDI IN plug to the MIDI OUT port on the drum kit. Then connect the USB plug to the computer.

  3. 3

Configure EZdrummer software to recognise the drum kit as a MIDI input device using the EZdrummer instruction manual. Ensure that each drum pad is associated with the desired drum sound in the software.

Tips and warnings

  • MIDI Drumming may not respond identically to a standard drum kit, it may take some practice to adapt to the new configuration.
  • Try changing the drum kits after you have recorded some drum beats. Changing kits does not erase the drumming information.
  • If EZdrummer is not receiving MIDI information, ensure that the MIDI-to-USB cable is connected properly to the IN and OUT ports.
