How to repair hard drive indexes when chkdsk can't

Chkdsk is the main tool in your operating system to enable recovery of drive information following corruption from hardware failure and malware, but it is not the only tool. Use the tools on your Windows installation disc to restore the indexing boot sector areas of the drive when Chkdsk is unable to make any headway on repairing your unit.

Instructions

    Insert the Windows disc into the computer. Restart the PC.

    Press any key when prompted to boot from disc. Select the language, keyboard and currency options.

    Click "Repair your computer." Click the drive containing Windows and press "Next."

  4. 4

    Click "Command Prompt." Type "bootrec.exe /fixmbr", press "Enter," then type "bootrec.exe /fixboot" to repair the boot indexes of your drive.
