How to Use the MIDI Controller on Guitar Hero Drums

The "Guitar Hero" drum controller has the ability to accept input from a MIDI controller. This allows players to use an actual electric drum kit to play the game, as opposed to the drum controller. This feature is most helpful for a drummer already used to using his own drum kit. Not all of the electric drum pads will be usable when connected to Guitar Hero. MIDI is a standardised method for sending electric music data. Any MIDI controller, not just electric drum kits, can potentially be used to control the "Guitar Hero" drum controller.

Instructions

  1. 1

Plug the MIDI cable into the "MIDI Out" port on the electric drum kit.

  2. 2

Plug the MIDI cable into the "MIDI In" port on the "Guitar Hero" drum controller.

  3. 3

Turn the "Guitar Hero" drum controller and electric drum kit on.

  4. 4

Start any "Guitar Hero" game with a drum mode.

  5. 5

Select "Music Studio" mode in the main menu of "Guitar Hero."

  6. 6

Test each drum pad on the electric drum set. Each colour drum button will be associated with a particular drum on the electric drum set. The other drums will have no function when playing "Guitar Hero." The bass pedal for the electric drum set will correspond to the bass pedal for the game.

Tips and warnings

  • You can change which drums on the electric drum kit are associated with the "Guitar Hero" drum set pads by switching plugs. For example, if the snare drum on the electric drum kit is the green drum on "Guitar Hero," you can switch the plug for the low tom drum with the snare drum plug on the electric drum kit to make the low tom drum the new green drum pad.
