How to Hang a Bead Doorway Curtain
Beaded curtains can be decorative or functional. (Portrait of a young pretty woman image by Paul Hill from

Hang a beaded curtain in the doorway of your kitchen or screened porch and you will never have to remind your family to close the door again. Beaded curtains keep insects out of a screened porch without blocking the flow of air. They are also useful for blocking the view into a kitchen while allowing you to easily enter and leave the room with your hands full. Acrylic beads are moulded onto strings, while wood and bamboo beads are individually strung. Both styles are easy to hang.

  1. 1

Measure the width of your doorway. If your beaded curtain has a bar at the top, use a hacksaw to cut off the excess width. If your curtain has a single pattern, cut off half the extra length on each end so your pattern will remain centred. If you have an acrylic bead curtain, pry off the end cap before cutting the bar. Replace the cap before you hang the bar.

  2. 2

Use a hammer and a small nail to make a starter hole for the cup hooks in the top of the door opening. Make the holes one inch in from the edge of the door frame on each side. Drive the nail in 1/2 inch and remove it. Screw the cup hooks in by hand. Hang the bar of the curtain on the cup hooks.

  3. 3

Use scissors to cut excess width off a curtain with a fabric top. Zigzag stitch the edges to prevent fraying or seal them with a liquid fray-preventer.

  4. 4

Hold a fabric topped curtain up in the doorway and mark the position of the eyelets on top of the door opening. Make a starter hole and screw in a cup hook at each mark. Hang the curtain on the hooks.

  5. 5

Shorten acrylic bead curtains by cutting off the excess length. Shorten curtains made of wooden or bamboo beads by cutting off the knot at the end of each strand, removing the excess beads and retying the knot.

Tips and warnings

  • If you need to cover a wider space, hang multiple curtains.
  • Beaded curtains can be hung on the walls in the same way. Just install the cup hooks at the desired height.
