Making a model of a human body cell is an interesting way to learn about this tiny organism. A cell is comprised of many parts that have different functions within the cells. A model needs to reflect the different parts for the viewer to have an understanding of how each part relies on the other. You can make a model of the human cell by using basic supplies available in every home or supermarket.
Things you need
2 large zipper-style plastic bags
Small plastic ball or deflated balloon
Assorted small foods, such as bubble gum balls, jelly worms, sesame seeds, mints, dried fruit, jelly beans
Toothpicks or matches
Glucose syrup, corn syrup or golden syrup
Open a zipper-style plastic bag; this will represent the protective cell membrane.
Place a small plastic ball or deflated balloon with the skinny end cut off into a zipper-style plastic bag. The ball or balloon will represent the cell nucleus.
Add assorted sesame seeds, mints, dried fruit, jelly beans and miniature gum balls to indicate different items surrounding the cell such as mitochondria, ribosomes, lysosomes and other types of organelles.
Toss some toothpicks and matches into the bag to represent the endoplasmic reticulum.
Sprinkle some glitter into the bag to represent protein on its way to becoming some type of organelle.
Fill the bag about half way to the top with glucose, corn or golden syrup. You can find one of these in a supermarket's baking aisle. The syrup represents the cytoplasm.
Close the zipper on the plastic bag, place it into a second plastic bag and zip it to help protect your human body cell.
