Retail versions of Windows XP SP2 require activation with Microsoft. Activation ensures that you're running a legitimately-purchased, unique copy of Windows. Windows XP's activation process is designed to reduce piracy. Windows XP is usually activated over the Internet or by modem. If you're using a computer without an Internet connection, you can activate Windows XP SP2 by phone. Microsoft provides toll-free activation telephone numbers. You must activate Windows XP SP2 within 30 days of installation to continue using it. Some versions of Windows XP for corporate users and computer manufacturers don't require activation.
